Announcing the Calero Marinas Solo Transat

  • This new single-handed transatlantic race is an official qualifying event for the famous Vendée Globe.
  • The Real Club Náutico de Arrecife will be organising the 3000nm challenge which departs from Lanzarote in April.

Three IMOCA 60 teams have already registered to take part in the Calero Marinas Solo Transat: Sébastien Destemau (faceOcean), Pieter Heerema (No Way Back), and Alan Roura (Un Vendée pour la Suisse) and for each, this will represent their first transatlantic race in their new boats.

The Calero Marinas Solo Transat offers an early chance to qualify for the Vendée Globe, known as the “Everest” of offshore races. The final fleet will gather to prepare in Marina Lanzarote prior to departure on the 9th April for the 3000nm crossing to Newport, RI, USA where they will be welcomed by Sail Newport and Newport Shipyard.

The race is organised by the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, a local Lanzarote institution that has created numerous national and international champions and together with Calero Marinas, has hosted the RORC Transatlantic Race, the Mini Transat, the Panerai Transat Classique and many one-design world championships. Julio Romero, President of the RCNA said: “Our main objective as a sailing club is to organise and develop sailing events. We are proud to be organising the first Calero Marinas Solo Transat and invite participants to enjoy our Club's hospitality and sincere admiration for their adventurous spirit”.

The main sponsor for the race is Calero Marinas, whose Lanzarote facilities Puerto Calero and Marina Lanzarote have achieved international acclaim as year-round sailing destinations attracting many Volvo Ocean Race training campaigns. The Canary Islands Tourism Authority and Lanzarote Tourist Board are also backing the event.
